A dramatic moment unfolded during the opening day of the Australian Open when a ball kid collapsed, prompting a temporary pause in the match between Ekaterina Alexandrova and Zeynep Sonmez. The incident took place as Alexandrova was making a comeback in the game after being behind a set and a break. As Alexandrova was in a favorable position to serve out the second set, the ball kid fell near the court, leading both players and court attendants to rush to provide assistance. The umpire quickly called for medical help, resulting in a suspension of play.

Commentator Catherine Whitaker noted the pause in play due to the ball kid’s condition, highlighting the impact on Alexandrova’s momentum in the match. Spectators praised Sonmez for her compassionate response to the situation, with fans commending her sportsmanship and humanity.

Despite the interruption affecting Alexandrova’s rhythm, the match resumed, and Sonmez managed to secure a remarkable 7-5 4-6 6-4 victory, much to the delight of her supporters. The Turkish player’s resilience and composure under pressure ultimately led to her triumph. As for Alexandrova, she will now shift her focus to the women’s doubles event, where she will team up with Venus Williams.

The incident with the ball kid was not the only challenge faced on the court, as Canadian qualifier Liam Draxl also required medical attention during his match due to the warm weather conditions. With temperatures reaching 28 degrees Celsius in Melbourne, players had to contend with the demanding environment during their matches.
