Ghislaine Maxwell’s attorney has expressed optimism that former acquaintance Donald Trump might consider granting a presidential pardon to the convicted sex trafficker. Maxwell, a British socialite, is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for her involvement in recruiting girls for Jeffrey Epstein’s exploitation. Attorney David Oscar Markus suggested that while Maxwell desires clemency, any potential pardon may not be immediate due to ongoing circumstances.

The White House has downplayed the likelihood of a pardon, citing previous statements from Trump indicating that the matter has not been seriously deliberated, although not completely ruled out. The idea of pardoning Maxwell has faced strong opposition from lawmakers and victims’ families, with concerns raised about the implications of such an action.

Maxwell, 64, was found guilty in December 2021 of sex trafficking a minor and other related crimes, making her the only one among Epstein’s associates to be prosecuted and convicted. Despite maintaining her innocence, her legal options have dwindled, with failed attempts to overturn her conviction and the Supreme Court rejecting her appeal, leaving presidential clemency as her primary avenue for potential release.

During her imprisonment in Tallahassee, Florida, Maxwell met with Todd Blanche, a former personal lawyer of Trump and the then Deputy Attorney General. The meeting raised questions about the purpose behind the Department of Justice’s engagement with her post-conviction, sparking speculation about potential inquiries into Trump’s connection to Epstein.

As Maxwell continues to serve her sentence, demands have arisen for her to provide testimony to lawmakers following the release of the Epstein files. Despite invoking her Fifth Amendment rights and declining to answer questions before the House Oversight Committee, Maxwell’s attorney has indicated her willingness to cooperate fully if granted clemency by President Trump.
