The newly appointed leader of McDonald’s in the UK acknowledges ongoing employee complaints three years after a sexual harassment scandal surfaced. Allegations revealed a toxic environment where young staff faced various forms of mistreatment, including harassment and discrimination. Following a BBC investigation in 2023, McDonald’s issued an apology and established a dedicated unit to address grievances.
CEO Lauren Schultz stated that the company’s procedures have significantly improved, although they are still addressing instances of misconduct. She emphasized the implementation of a tiered system to handle complaints effectively and ensure accountability. Despite acknowledging lingering issues, Schultz asserted that McDonald’s has made substantial progress and is leading the industry in safeguarding programs.
Schultz highlighted that the challenges faced within McDonald’s are not unique to the company but are prevalent across the industry. She underscored the company’s commitment to addressing these issues and emphasized their top-tier processes. The ongoing complaints are believed to encompass various concerns throughout the organization.
In response to past allegations, McDonald’s announced the launch of a large-scale work experience initiative targeting young individuals aged 25 and under. Schultz clarified that the program was not a diversion tactic but a long-term effort to provide valuable opportunities for youth seeking entry into the workforce.
The work experience program, previously offered on a smaller scale, will now be company-wide in the UK. With the majority of McDonald’s outlets operated by franchisees, the initiative aims to benefit the 100,000 employees under the age of 25. Participants under 18 will receive recommended hourly wages, and Schultz affirmed her confidence in the safety and development opportunities provided by McDonald’s.
Regarding potential price adjustments due to external factors like the Middle East conflict, Schultz acknowledged the need to balance cost pressures with consumer affordability. While hinting at a slight price increase, she assured customers that McDonald’s would remain competitive and value-driven in its pricing strategy. Meal deals and saver options are expected to maintain their pricing, with ongoing considerations for future adjustments.
