A man suspected to be the shooter who caused chaos and prompted the evacuation of Donald Trump from a White House correspondents’ dinner managed to enter the event as a guest.
The incident unfolded during the annual dinner held at the Washington Hilton Hotel ballroom when gunshots rang out, causing panic among the 2,500 attendees, including the US President, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, various politicians, and numerous journalists.
Law enforcement officials identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old individual from Torrance, California. Armed with a shotgun, handgun, and knives, the suspect breached a security checkpoint at the hotel and fired at a Secret Service agent, who fortunately escaped unharmed due to his bulletproof vest.
Despite not having a criminal record or being known to law enforcement, the suspect managed to gain access to the hotel as a guest. Police authorities confirmed that the armed man, later apprehended, had charged towards the ballroom before being subdued. He sustained no injuries but was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
President Trump shared an image of the detained suspect, labeling him a “lone wolf whack job” during a subsequent press conference. The alleged gunman, who worked as a teacher and video game developer in California, was described in a LinkedIn profile matching the suspect’s name as a part-time teacher at C2 Education, a test prep and tutoring company. Additionally, he mentioned his involvement in developing video games, including a project named “First Law.”
Having graduated with degrees in mechanical engineering and computer science from prominent California institutions, the suspect had previously garnered attention for inventing a wheelchair emergency brake prototype during his time at Caltech.
