A traveler was swiftly taken to the hospital after encountering the ‘most lethal creatures’ globally, capable of causing death in less than five minutes.
Hailing from Australia, Guy Rowles was participating in surfing activities in Fiji when he experienced an intense sting on his arm on the initial day of his journey. Rowles, accompanied by his father, was immersed in the water when he accidentally brushed against the jellyfish tentacles.
The incident occurred at Sujees Surf Stay in Cloudbreak, situated in the Mamanuca Islands, renowned for its challenging waves. Recounting the ordeal, Rowles shared with the surfing publication Stab, “I suddenly felt a sharp sting on my arm. It was as if scalding hot oil had been poured on me.”
Suffering from a burning sensation in his arm, tightness in his chest, and experiencing convulsions, Rowles was swiftly transported to a hospital in Nadi, which was over an hour away from the scene.
Expressing his fear and symptoms, Rowles conveyed, “I was trembling, vomiting, and had limited sensation in my legs.” Despite the severity of the situation, Rowles managed to survive the attack after receiving immediate medical attention.
Subsequent to the incident, medical staff treated the affected area with vinegar to deactivate any remaining stinging cells and eliminate lingering tentacles. Reflecting on the harrowing encounter, Rowles emphasized how the incident has altered his perspective.
Box jellyfish, named due to their body shape, possess tentacles that can extend up to 10 feet, covered in nematocysts, which are microscopic harpoons connected to venom-filled bulbs. These marine creatures can fatally sting a person within minutes and are predominantly found in the Indo-Pacific region and northern Australia.
Before Rowles’ encounter, the Fijian government had issued a health advisory regarding the presence of jellyfish in the water. The ministry urged caution, particularly due to the poisonous nature of Box Jellyfish, advising individuals to seek medical attention promptly if they display any signs or symptoms.
Emphasizing the need for vigilance, the ministry highlighted the importance of adhering to safety measures when venturing into the sea. Despite the threatening nature of the injury, Rowles managed to recover from the attack, acknowledging the significance of the incident in reshaping his outlook on life.
