Frankie Dettori has officially retired from his illustrious jockey career after achieving one last significant victory in Brazil, claiming the initial stage of the nation’s Triple Crown series. Initially planning to retire during Champions Day at Ascot in October 2023, Dettori decided to prolong his career in the United States instead.
The 55-year-old jockey announced his retirement date for the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar last November, followed by a brief farewell tour in South America, culminating at Rio de Janeiro’s Gavea racecourse on Sunday. During the event, Dettori triumphed aboard Speak Alpha and then Bet You Can in the Brazilian 2,000 Guineas, the Grande Premio Estado do Rio De Janeiro, allowing him to execute his signature flying dismount celebration one last time.
In an interview with Agentes305, Dettori expressed his surprise and gratitude for winning a Group 1 race on his final day, reflecting on his fulfilling career, stating, “I never expected to win a Group 1 on my last day. It’s been brilliant. I was very emotional. I enjoyed everything. I’ve had a beautiful career and I’m blessed I can walk out in one piece. I achieved everything I wanted to do. I hope people enjoyed what I did. Of course, my career as a jockey is over, but I’m not done. I will still be actively involved in the racing world.”
Dettori has embraced a new role as a global ambassador for Amo Racing, led by Kia Joorabchian, following his final British Group 1 victory on King Of Steel in the Champion Stakes. In a heartfelt social media message to his fans, the veteran jockey shared his deep appreciation for the sport that has been his life, reminiscing on the incredible journey he has experienced over nearly four decades, acknowledging the support of his family and the racing community, and expressing gratitude to his loyal fans for enabling him to live out his childhood dream.
