Sky has recently announced a significant change in the television viewing landscape, hinting at a potential decline in the traditional satellite dish era. The company has ceased selling its Sky Q set-top box on its website and is now steering new customers towards the Sky Stream or Sky Glass TVs instead.
In a recent statement, Sky stated, “We’ve unplugged Sky Q. Plug in Sky Stream for less. Sky Q is no longer available to buy online.” Customers seeking to purchase Sky Q online will now be prompted to consider the more affordable Stream box, with Sky emphasizing, “You can take your viewing to the next level with Sky Stream starting at £15 a month.”
The shift towards Sky Stream and Sky Glass, which deliver content over the internet rather than through satellite signals, offers numerous advantages. These options are quick to set up, eliminating the need for an engineer to make installations. Additionally, they receive regular updates and new features, making them a dynamic choice. Opting for a basic Sky Stream package is notably cheaper than Sky Q, with prices starting at just £15 per month.
The transition from Sky Q to streaming options is not unexpected, as Sky has been focusing more on streaming-based services due to increasing customer preference. However, this change only affects online orders, and existing Sky Q users can still purchase the device by contacting Sky directly or visiting retail outlets.
Sky clarified, “Sky Q is no longer available online, but customers can order through phone or visit our stores. Alternatively, they can choose our popular streaming products, Sky Glass and Sky Stream, preferred by 9 out of 10 new customers.”
While Sky Q remains a popular choice among many households, the company’s direction towards a streaming-centric future is becoming more apparent.
