Drivers are being advised not to worry despite the surge in oil prices surpassing $100 per barrel. Brent crude reached nearly $120 at one point on Monday, marking levels unseen since the summer of 2022.

As oil is a key element in producing petrol and diesel, spikes in oil prices directly impact fuel costs for consumers. The national average for diesel breached the 150p per liter mark over the weekend, hitting 150.97p on Sunday, according to the RAC. Unleaded petrol averaged 137.51p per liter on the same day.

AA president, Edmund King, reassured that significant fuel price increases won’t occur suddenly. Due to pre-purchased fuel at previous rates, the effects of rising oil prices may take time to reflect at the pump.

In the interim, drivers are encouraged to compare fuel prices in their area to secure the best deals. King advised motorists not to alter their refueling routines but consider reducing non-essential trips and adjusting driving habits to conserve fuel, especially with warmer weather aiding fuel efficiency.

Platforms like “Petrol Prices” offer free online tools to check the latest petrol and diesel prices based on postcode. Additionally, the RAC provides current national averages for fuel, including supermarket and motorway station breakdowns.

The government recently launched a “fuel finder” initiative, compelling all UK filling stations to report petrol and diesel price changes within 30 minutes. This data is publicly available, enabling apps, websites, and car navigation systems to display real-time price comparisons. The Competition and Markets Authority vowed to take action against retailers failing to comply.

To save on fuel costs, avoiding pricey motorway service stations and planning refueling stops strategically can be effective. Regular car maintenance is also crucial to ensure optimal fuel efficiency.
