Amazon’s popular Fire TV Sticks have been favored for providing easy access to premium entertainment like movies and sports without the high costs of traditional subscriptions. However, the trend of illicitly streaming channels such as Sky Sports through these affordable devices seems to be ending.
Amazon has declared a significant crackdown on unauthorized Fire TV Sticks, planning to block any unofficial apps that enable access to pirated content. An Amazon spokesperson emphasized the illegality of piracy and highlighted efforts to prevent it within their Appstore. Through collaboration with the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE), Amazon will now block apps identified for offering access to pirated content, even those sideloaded from outside the Appstore.
Although the full enforcement has not commenced, signs of change are evident with customers receiving warning messages on their TV screens. AFTVnews reported that launching a dubious app can trigger an on-screen alert notifying users that the app has been flagged for providing access to unlicensed content, advising to uninstall the app immediately.
While users can still opt to open the flagged app, Amazon’s warning signals detection of unauthorized activity, hinting at a potential complete ban in the near future. The timeline for the total blocking implementation has not been confirmed, but the rollout will start in Europe, with UK devices expected to be impacted subsequently.
Despite the crackdown’s potential to curb illegal streaming, it does not address the underlying issue of escalating subscription fees. Media analyst Paolo Pescatore commended the move as overdue and a positive step but cautioned that consumers are burdened by rising costs as broadcasters invest more in acquiring live sports rights and pass these expenses onto viewers, creating a fragmented and costly viewing experience.
