Truss, a former Prime Minister, participated in the 70th Parliamentary Ski Week in Davos alongside six other former Conservative MPs. The event, which promotes collaboration between the UK, Switzerland, and the European Union, included Truss finishing third in the women’s skiing competition.
Critics voiced concerns about Truss attending the event, citing her political stance and its potential impact on Britain’s interests. Labour Party chair Anna Turley criticized Truss for her past decisions while in office and suggested she should prioritize addressing the consequences of her actions instead of participating in ski events.
Truss, who briefly held the position of Tory PM, expressed aspirations to follow in the footsteps of Donald Trump and promote a similar movement in the UK. Her political journey from a Remain supporter to a vocal advocate for Brexit has been marked by significant shifts in her stance on key issues. As the Foreign Secretary, Truss took charge of post-Brexit negotiations with the EU following Lord Frost’s resignation.
The Parliamentary Ski Week attendees indulged in luxurious dining experiences at renowned restaurants in Davos, known for their upscale offerings. The event, established in 1956 to foster diplomatic ties post-World War II, serves as a platform for networking and political discussions between the UK, Switzerland, and the EU.
Besides skiing, the event features various activities including training sessions and social interactions, emphasizing the strong bond between British and Swiss parliamentarians. Notable attendees included former Tory MPs Sara Britcliffe, Tim Loughton, Lady Victoria Borwick, Sally-Ann Hart, Henry Smith, and Ben Everitt. Shadow Secretary of State for Business and Trade Andrew Griffith, along with Tory peers and British Ambassador to Switzerland, also participated in the event.
The Parliamentary Ski Week is a key initiative in maintaining robust relations between the UK and Switzerland on political, sporting, and friendly fronts. Truss, among other MPs, attended the event in January 2024, receiving hospitality valued at nearly £13,000. Truss’s spokesperson declined to provide a statement when approached by the media outlet.
