In a surprising turn of events at the Australian Open, Jannik Sinner’s opponent, Hugo Gaston, abruptly retired from their match and was overcome with emotion, breaking down in tears while on court. Despite a strong start by Gaston with three break points against the World No. 2, he appeared to struggle physically throughout the match.

During a break, Gaston, ranked World No. 93, was seen taking some tablets before returning to the court. Sinner smoothly claimed the first set 6-2 and capitalized on Gaston’s fatigue to secure the second set 6-1. With Sinner leading 2-0 in sets, Gaston made the decision to concede the match.

Sinner displayed sportsmanship by consoling Gaston, who was visibly upset. Reflecting on the match, Sinner mentioned he sensed Gaston was not at his best physically. Former British No. 1 and TNT Sports commentator, Tim Henman, noted that Gaston received medical attention during the match and ultimately signaled his inability to continue due to apparent discomfort.
