A man has confessed to sexually assaulting a Sikh woman by forcefully entering her residence and using derogatory language towards her. John Ashby, 32, admitted to the religiously motivated assault and rape of the woman in Birmingham. Initially denying the charges, Ashby changed his plea during the trial proceedings.
The prosecution had accused Ashby, who was homeless at the time, of attacking the victim in Walsall in October after tracking her from a bus and intruding into her home while she was upstairs. During the trial, it was revealed that despite the victim’s resistance, Ashby subjected her to physical and verbal abuse, demanding her to undress, assaulting her with a stick, and attempting to strangle her while forcing her into a bathtub.
Additionally, Ashby allegedly made derogatory remarks towards the victim, asking about her toothbrush, exposing himself, and committing indecent acts. The victim, visibly distressed and emotionally shaken, reported the assault to the police, detailing the horrifying ordeal she endured at the hands of the intruder.
The court was shown body-worn camera footage capturing the victim’s distress, where she mentioned being racially targeted and verbally abused during the attack. Witnesses testified to the victim’s emotional state and the traumatic experience she went through while being attacked in her own home.
Following an outburst in court where a member of the public confronted Ashby, the trial was temporarily adjourned. Subsequently, Ashby changed his plea to guilty for the religiously aggravated assault and rape charges. The sentencing is scheduled for Friday.
Rav Dhillon from the Crown Prosecution Service expressed dismay over the incident, labeling it as a disturbing act driven by religious animosity. Dhillon highlighted the collaboration between law enforcement and the prosecution in gathering substantial evidence, including CCTV footage, DNA samples, and witness statements, leading to Ashby’s admission of guilt.
The prosecution expressed sympathy for the victim and hoped that the legal proceedings would provide her with a sense of justice and closure.
