Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister, has pledged unwavering support for the British people as the contentious two-child benefit restriction is lifted. This change, effective from Monday, is expected to lift approximately half a million children out of poverty, a move that Starmer proudly endorses.

Acknowledging the financial concerns of families amidst global uncertainties, Starmer emphasized his government’s commitment to addressing the cost of living challenges. He stated that his administration will prioritize the well-being of British citizens and make decisions that benefit them in the long run.

In a statement, Starmer expressed his dedication to alleviating the financial burdens faced by families, highlighting the significant impact of lifting nearly half a million children out of poverty. Additionally, he mentioned the government’s efforts to collaborate with international partners to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East, particularly in Iran, to mitigate economic pressures.

Emphasizing the importance of current global developments shaping the nation’s future, Starmer affirmed the government’s strategy of making prudent decisions now to ensure a stronger and more secure future for the country.

The two-child limit, initially imposed by the Conservative Party, restricted benefits like Universal Credit to the first two children in a family. With this restriction now lifted, about 1.5 million children are anticipated to benefit from the change. Concurrently, the standard rate of Universal Credit will increase by 6.2%, equating to approximately £265 annually for individuals and £465 for couples.

Responding to the government’s actions, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey criticized Labour for not adequately addressing the cost-of-living crisis. He called on the Prime Minister to consider measures such as a 10p cut in fuel duty and ensure that families and pensioners are shielded from potentially exorbitant energy bill increases later in the year.
