A man, Robert Chung, is currently entangled in a legal dispute over a £600,000 inheritance following the passing of his parents. Robert, now 62, had returned to his family home in Essex more than three decades ago to care for his aging parents until their demise. He claimed that the house was assured to him as he had sacrificed a lucrative career in the film industry to provide care, working at a Job Centre for over 20 years.
The inheritance conflict arose when Robert’s siblings, Marina Bennett and Richard Chung, demanded an equal split of the estate, including the house. They criticized Robert for being a financial burden on their parents and disputed his entitlement to the property. They alleged that their mother had been the one caring for Robert, cooking his meals and tending to his needs.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that the family home in South Woodford, now valued at approximately £400,000, was where the children were raised. The siblings’ barrister argued that their parents had always encouraged independence, pointing out that Marina and Richard had pursued successful careers abroad while Robert remained at home, causing disappointment.
Robert defended his position, stating that he had returned home at his parents’ request to care for them, especially after his father’s cancer diagnosis. Despite claims of promises made regarding the house, a will in Robert’s favor was not executed before his mother’s passing in 2016, leading to the estate being divided equally among the siblings.
The legal battle intensified with accusations of Robert being a pathological liar and his siblings questioning his care for their mother. Marina described Robert as idle, spending his days watching movies while their mother handled all responsibilities. Robert refuted these claims, asserting that he had always attended to his mother’s needs and maintained her well-being.
The court proceedings are ongoing, with the judge yet to make a final decision on the ownership of the house. The professional estate administrator has initiated legal action to have Robert vacate the property for sale, seeking reimbursement for years of occupancy. Robert, on the other hand, is contesting the claim, asserting his rights based on alleged assurances from his parents.
