A renowned jockey narrowly escaped death when her pelvis was crushed by a horse she was riding. Sonja Logan, in 2023, was the victim of a carjacking incident where a group of assailants attacked her, causing severe injuries three weeks before her wedding. Despite the perpetrators fleeing the scene, they were never apprehended. Recalling the excruciating pain of being trapped under a half-ton racehorse, Logan described it as the most intense suffering she had ever experienced.
While riding Jumping Power Two, a horse trained by her husband Tommy, Logan was thrown off when the horse became startled. The horse then landed on her, resulting in a pelvic injury that required immediate medical attention. Logan was transported to Darwin Royal Hospital and later airlifted to Adelaide Royal Hospital for specialized treatment, including surgery to repair her crushed pelvis.
Reflecting on the incident, Logan emphasized the severity of the pain she endured, likening it to a car crash impact. She acknowledged her luck in surviving the accident, as the horse’s weight could have been fatal if it had landed differently. Currently in recovery at home with the aid of a walking frame, Logan remains optimistic about returning to racing after a projected six to eight-month healing period.
Following the traumatic event, Logan made a remarkable comeback to horse riding, achieving success in competitions despite battling personal struggles with depression and alcohol abuse. Overcoming these challenges, she found solace in competitive bodybuilding and established a support system to navigate her recovery journey.
Expressing gratitude for the unwavering support from her loved ones, especially her husband Tommy, Logan emphasized that the horse incident, though painful, was unintentional unlike her previous assault experience. Her resilience and determination to overcome adversities continue to inspire those around her as she focuses on her rehabilitation and eventual return to the racetrack.
