A mother of three from Gaza shared the heartbreaking experience of discovering her residence was obliterated by Israeli airstrikes. Alaa Radwan escaped Palestine in 2024 due to the frequent bombings near their temporary shelter. Currently residing in Egypt, the family intends to relocate to the UK for Alaa to pursue a Master’s degree in London.
Upon learning of her destroyed home through a neighbor’s photo, Alaa expressed profound sorrow at the loss of their property, which they had recently purchased before the tragic events. Forced to evacuate by the Israeli army on her birthday, Alaa and her family sought refuge in Deir Al-balah amid the chaos of ongoing airstrikes.
Living in close quarters due to safety concerns, Alaa recounted the harrowing experiences of comforting her children during the frightening sounds of war. Months later, confirmation of their home’s destruction arrived through images shared by a building resident, revealing the extent of the damage.
The once-furnished apartment was unrecognizable, with cables hanging from ceilings and a hole exposing the outside world. Overwhelmed by the loss, Alaa expressed the difficulty of detaching from material possessions after witnessing the devastation.
Following a perilous incident close to their new residence in Egypt, the family decided to leave Gaza to safeguard their children. Starting anew in Egypt involved significant challenges as they coped with the aftermath of losing their home, jobs, and enduring hardships during the crisis.
Despite the adversity faced, Alaa’s determination led to fundraising success for their relocation to the UK. Securing a place at Goldsmith’s University for a Master’s degree offered a glimmer of hope for a fresh start in London after the traumatic experiences in Gaza.
Looking back on the past, Alaa acknowledged the irreparable changes in Gaza and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to rebuild their lives in the UK. Though the memories of loss and suffering remain, the family looks forward to a brighter future away from the turmoil of their homeland.
