O2 users with older phones connected to the network are urged to upgrade promptly as the provider issues a final alert. Failure to do so may result in the loss of access to online services, including popular apps like WhatsApp. O2, now under Virgin Media, is set to completely deactivate its 3G signal this year, following the lead of other major companies such as EE and Vodafone.

O2 has confirmed that while some areas may still display a 3G signal briefly in early 2026, the network will soon be entirely shut down. Once this transition occurs, individuals still using outdated 3G devices without 4G or 5G capabilities will lose the ability to browse the web or use services like WhatsApp without a Wi-Fi connection.

Jeanie York, the Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Media O2, emphasized the importance of upgrading to modern devices with faster and more reliable 4G and 5G networks. She noted the diminishing relevance of 3G technology in today’s interconnected world.

York further explained that Virgin Media O2 is nearing the completion of its 3G switch-off program after successful trials in 2025, aligning with other industry operators who have already made the transition.

Although O2 reassures that only a small segment of the population will be affected, individuals using 3G devices should have received notifications about upgrade options. It is strongly advised for those still on 3G to make the switch promptly to avoid disruptions in mobile data access, although basic call and text functionalities will remain unaffected.

The phasing out of 3G is driven by its outdated capabilities compared to modern standards. While 3G offers limited web speeds around 6Mbps, 5G provides speeds exceeding 100Mbps, showcasing the need for the transition to free up spectrum for enhanced 4G and 5G services.

York highlighted the industry’s decision to discontinue 3G networks due to declining usage, reallocating spectrum for improved 4G and 5G services. This shift aims to enhance user experiences with faster data speeds, more reliable streaming, and higher-quality voice calls.
