Nestled in Derbyshire, the picturesque Peak District National Park spans over 300,000 acres, boasting breathtaking landscapes and challenging climbs that may seem daunting to newcomers. However, when faced with uncertainty on where to begin exploring this vast terrain, the solution becomes clear.

For an unparalleled experience of the Peak District’s majestic peaks and natural beauty, consider setting aside the hiking boots and embarking on a unique adventure starting from the highest market town in England, Buxton.

A stay at The Buxton Crescent Hotel, situated at the heart of the town and serving as a serene retreat in Derbyshire, offers easy access to a variety of scenic trails. With numerous biking routes available, I opted to pedal through the countryside with the assistance of PeakePedals, discovering the region’s renowned landscapes and charming villages.

Renowned for its striking landscapes, historic towns, and grand estates, Derbyshire beckons visitors to explore its wonders. Sykes Cottages provides a range of accommodation options starting from £32 per night, ensuring a comfortable stay amidst the region’s natural splendor.

Tailored for guests of The Buxton Crescent Hotel and those arriving at Buxton Station, the White Peak Adventure route by PeakePedals allows visitors to traverse the idyllic villages, valleys, and hills of the White Peak region, located south of Buxton. Offering e-bike rentals and Garmin GPX navigation devices pre-programmed with chosen routes, guests can enjoy a hassle-free day of exploration with expert guidance.

Our journey was enhanced by the expertise of Dan, a knowledgeable local guide from the hotel staff, who led us through scenic routes, highlighting points of interest along the way. Cycling through the national park, we covered over 20 miles, meandering through quaint villages and picturesque roads, making the most of our limited time with breathtaking views and without the discomfort of blisters.

A standout moment was passing through the captivating ‘Dragon’s Back’ limestone reef, offering a unique perspective of the landscape. Our guide Dan graciously suggested charming pubs, cafes, and villages for brief stops, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the English countryside experience.

Exploring the Peaks on a bike provided a comprehensive view of the region, surpassing what one could witness on foot. Our journey included stops in Longnor and Hartington, where we savored the local delights and relished the quaint village ambiance.

As a coffee enthusiast, stumbling upon cozy cafes and indulging in homemade treats was a delightful experience. Sampling the renowned Bakewell Tart, a local delicacy, added a flavorful touch to our Derbyshire escapade.

Despite encountering cold weather and dense fog typical of British March, our excursion remained enchanting, albeit slightly obscured by the atmospheric conditions. For those seeking a shorter hike near Buxton, Lud’s Church offers an easy and scenic trail, leading to a hidden paradise that promises a rewarding experience.

Commencing our walk from The Roaches Gradbach Car Park, we followed signposts through forests and meadows, eventually reaching the mystical gorge adorned with vibrant green moss. The tranquil walk culminated in a leisurely descent back to our starting point, completing the journey in just an hour and a half.

For a luxurious stay in Buxton, consider booking a retreat at Champneys Buxton Crescent Hotel & Wellness Spa, with rates starting from £185 including bed and breakfast. Visit buxtoncrescent.com for bookings and inquiries regarding accommodation options.

To explore the Peak District on two wheels, Peake Pedals offers bike rentals and private tours, ensuring an unforgettable adventure through Derbyshire’s captivating landscapes and charming villages.
