The demand for faster internet connection is widespread, but unfortunately, many households are still facing inadequate broadband speeds in various regions of the country. A recent report by Broadband Genie has highlighted the severe broadband challenges in Heol-Y-Fedw, Cymmer, Port Talbot, where residents are struggling with incredibly slow speeds of only 0.81 Mbps. To put this into perspective, this speed falls below the minimum requirements for streaming services like Netflix and Disney+, making it unfeasible for streaming content and leading to excessively long download times.
Comparatively, this Welsh street is a staggering 1,494 times slower than the fastest street in the UK, where the same movie could be downloaded in just 40 seconds. Other areas facing similarly dire situations include Turnberry Crescent in Aberdeen, Wesley Street in Maesteg, and Occupation Lane in Lincoln.
The list of the top 10 worst streets for broadband speeds includes Heol-Y-Fedw, Cymmer, Port Talbot with a speed of 0.81Mbps, Turnberry Crescent in Bridge of Don, Aberdeen with 1.06Mbps, Wesley Street in Maesteg with 1.45Mbps, Occupation Lane in Broadholme, Lincoln with 1.63Mbps, and others.
For individuals residing in these areas, there is hope for improvement. Broadband Genie suggests that many of these streets can access better broadband services by considering a switch in providers or upgrading to full fiber from traditional copper cables.
Broadband Genie explains that despite the current challenges, all ten slowest streets in the UK have access to Fibre to the Cabinet broadband (FTTC), which can offer speeds of around 35Mb. Additionally, seven streets have access to Ultrafast broadband with speeds exceeding 100Mb, and four of the slowest streets have access to full fiber broadband. This suggests that residents in these areas may not be fully aware of the superior broadband options available to them.
To address slow broadband speeds, Alex Tofts from Broadband Genie provides five essential tips for enhancing internet performance:
1. Test your broadband connection to determine if it aligns with the speeds promised in your contract. If not, consider upgrading your plan for better performance.
2. Optimize your router placement by locating it centrally within your home away from obstructions for improved coverage.
3. Switch to the 5Ghz frequency on your router for faster speeds, enabling it through the router settings for enhanced performance.
4. Ensure router security by monitoring connected devices and removing unidentified users from the network to protect your connection.
5. Keep your router and devices up to date with the latest software updates to optimize performance and maintain security.
While some streets struggle with slow broadband speeds, there are also areas experiencing high-speed internet access, such as Inglewood Avenue in Derby (1.210Gbps), Moatview Park in Belfast (1
