Donald Trump has once again brought the world to the edge of disaster, only to step back and postpone the crisis for two weeks. These actions are unlikely to harm his reputation as “TACO” – Trump Always Chickens Out – a nickname that has clung to him since the tariff debacle.
Trump abruptly shifted his stance on the Iran conflict, agreeing to a ceasefire that delays his self-imposed doomsday deadline by two weeks. He mentioned a “10-point plan” proposed by Iran, which appears to be the same plan previously rejected by him as inadequate.
While Iran has agreed to grant access to the vital Strait of Hormuz, it comes with the condition of their supervision, essentially granting them full control over a crucial aspect of the global economy.
The day unfolded with dramatic brinksmanship, starting with Trump’s warning to Iran on Truth Social about dire consequences. This post sparked widespread criticism and calls for his removal under the 25th Amendment. Simultaneously, the US initiated an attack on Kharg Island, part of Iran’s oil infrastructure.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, urged Trump to agree to a two-week ceasefire to facilitate peace talks and requested Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz during this period as a goodwill gesture.
Trump eventually agreed to the ceasefire, citing discussions with Pakistani officials. He emphasized that the ceasefire hinged on Iran ensuring safe passage for oil tankers through the Strait.
Following Trump’s decision, Israel also confirmed adherence to the ceasefire. Iran’s foreign minister declared victory, stating that the US had accepted their 10-point proposal framework.
Trump celebrated the ceasefire, highlighting the potential for profit in rebuilding Iran and expressing optimism for peace in the region. He envisioned a prosperous future, likening it to a “Golden Age of the Middle East.”
The developments mark a significant shift in the ongoing conflict, with diplomatic efforts gaining momentum towards a peaceful resolution.
