A traveler was apprehended during a stroll on vacation. The individual identified as Karl Adolf Amrhein, a U.S. citizen, was stopped at 7:15 am on March 19 while carrying bags along Jalan Raya Sukawati in Gianyar Regency, Bali, Indonesia, according to the local police. Pecalang officers on patrol in the area encountered the foreign national walking.
Superintendent Chandra Citra Kesuma, the Chief of Gianyar Sub-regional Police, stated that after initial communication breakdown, the traveler was taken to the Sukawati Police Station for further inquiry. Reports from Antara News revealed that the tourist confessed to walking from a villa in the Ubud region due to the end of his stay and the unavailability of transportation to a new accommodation.
The police authorities, along with the traditional village’s Pecalang, informed the detainee about the ongoing Nyepi celebration in Bali, emphasizing the day of no activities. The detained person was informed of the mandatory stay-at-home order during Nyepi Day, where outdoor activities and public transport are restricted.
Nyepi Day in Bali signifies the start of the new year, observed quietly without the usual festivities seen in other parts of the world. The island enforces a complete halt to activities, with roads deserted and tourist spots shuttered. The entire population, including non-Hindus, adheres to the restrictions imposed during the celebration.
The day preceding Nyepi, known as Ngrupuk, serves as a release of noise and energy, characterized by various symbolic rituals like parading evil spirit effigies and torching them. Hotels like the Viceroy Bali do not allow new check-ins during Nyepi but provide limited facilities to current guests. Chief Chandra stressed the importance of respecting Balinese customs, especially during significant cultural events, to ensure harmony within the community.
