The U.S. Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, emphasized that the Trump administration is focused on safeguarding domestic supply chains and will not tolerate any retaliatory actions from countries, including Canada, in response to the proposed tariffs. Greer clarified that the tariff threats are not specifically targeting Canada but are part of a broader global strategy.

Recent discussions between Canada and the U.S. have been described as productive by Greer, who highlighted the importance of aligning with President Trump’s trade policies. The looming deadline of August 19 has been identified as a critical point in the negotiations, with potential options being presented to Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney.

While Canada aims to address concerns related to provincial liquor bans, dairy quotas, and auto tariffs, the U.S. has put forward a proposal to reduce some sector-specific tariffs, although not to the extent desired by the Canadian side. Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet expressed skepticism about the possibility of reaching a deal before the tariff deadline, cautioning against compromising on dairy negotiations.

Greer underscored that there are multiple trade issues between the U.S. and Canada, pointing out alcohol bans and retaliatory tariffs as key sticking points. Meanwhile, former Canadian ambassador to the U.S., Frank McKenna, defended Canada’s actions as a response to what he perceived as unfair and illegal measures imposed by the U.S., emphasizing the need for self-defense in trade relations.
