Starting April 8th, the Home Office is set to roll out a substantial increase in passport fees for all categories, marking the first time adults may have to pay over £100. The proposed 8% hike in UK passport prices will also affect children and pensioners. These adjustments, subject to Parliamentary approval, aim to shift the burden of funding away from general taxation towards a user-funded model.
According to the Home Office, the fee revision is crucial for sustaining operational costs related to passport processing, consular services abroad, and border operations for British citizens. Online adult passport applications will see a rise from £94.50 to £102, while postal applications could surge from £107 to £115.50. For children, online applications might increase from £61.50 to £66.50, with postal applications potentially going up from £74 to £80.
Individuals born on or before September 2, 1929, with any British nationality during their application, can still obtain a free 32-page concessionary passport. Naturalized or registered British nationals will also qualify for this benefit, regardless of when they naturalized or registered, though delivery charges may apply for passport return or document dispatch.
While early passport applications are recommended, a next-day premium service remains an option in the UK. However, the upcoming fee adjustment on April 8th could elevate this service cost from £222 to £239.50. Overseas applicants can anticipate price increments as well, with online adult applications rising from £108 to £116.50 and children’s applications from £70 to £75.50. Paper applications abroad are also set to increase from £120.50 to £130 for adults and from £82.50 to £89 for children.
The last passport price adjustment occurred on April 10, 2025, with an adult passport cost climbing from £88.50 to £94.50. Prior increases were noted in April 2024 and February 2023, the latter marking the first hike in five years.
For those in need of a new passport, applying well in advance is advised as processing may take up to three weeks, especially during peak travel seasons. More information or passport applications can be accessed on the government website.
