Carlos Alcaraz made history by defeating Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final, becoming the youngest tennis player in the Open era to achieve a career Grand Slam victory, surpassing Rafael Nadal’s record. Despite losing the initial set 6-2, the world No. 1 rallied back to claim the next three sets 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 and secure his first Melbourne triumph.
At 22 years old, Alcaraz has previously won each of the other three Grand Slams twice but had not succeeded in Australia until now. After being eliminated in the quarter-finals in the past two editions, including a loss to Djokovic last year, he reached his debut final in this year’s tournament.
In a match that lasted over three hours, Alcaraz avenged his previous defeat to Djokovic and dethroned the 11-time champion. He achieved this feat at 22 years and 272 days, breaking the previous record held by Don Budge in 1938 at 22 years and 363 days, with Nadal holding the Open era record.
Nadal was present at the event to witness Alcaraz rewrite tennis history and claim the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup. With his victory, Alcaraz now boasts seven Grand Slam singles titles, surpassing Bjorn Borg’s record as the youngest player to reach that milestone.
The win also puts Alcaraz three titles ahead of his rival Jannik Sinner, whom Djokovic defeated in the semi-finals. Djokovic, who was aiming to become the all-time leader in Grand Slam singles titles with 25, fell short in his 38th Grand Slam final after facing physical challenges throughout the match.
Djokovic graciously congratulated Alcaraz on his historic win, acknowledging the Spaniard’s outstanding performance. He also expressed his respect for his long-time rival, Nadal, who was in attendance at the event. Djokovic praised Nadal’s presence and thanked him for their shared court experiences.
The Australian Open final showcased an intense battle between the seasoned champion Djokovic and the young prodigy Alcaraz, marking a significant moment in tennis history.
