The unexpected passing of snooker icon John Virgo has rocked the sports community today. His bereaved spouse shared with the Mirror her exclusive thoughts on the loss, leading the tributes to the man known as ‘Mr. Perfection.’

In 1979, John reached the semi-finals of the World Championship and clinched the UK Championship by defeating Terry Griffiths 14-13, despite being penalized two frames for tardiness. Renowned for his larger-than-life persona, he became a beloved figure on the 1990s game show Big Break alongside Jim Davidson, famous for his catchphrase, “Where’s the cue ball going?” Additionally, he excelled as a top commentator for snooker on the BBC.

Reflecting on John’s passing from their residence in Mijas Costa, Spain, his wife Rosie Ries told the Mirror, “We were nearing our 16th wedding anniversary. Life without John is unimaginable; he was my true love and closest companion.” Having tied the knot in 2009 after years of friendship, the couple shared a deep bond.

John’s close friend James Malyon, present with Rosie, confirmed the cause of death as “a ruptured aorta, occurring suddenly.” Overwhelmed by the news, James, who shared the golf course with John, expressed, “I’m at a loss, it’s a shock that hit us unexpectedly just five hours ago.” John, survived by his children Gary and Brook-Leah from his second marriage, had a profound impact on those around him.

Describing John as a “fantastic individual” and the soul of gatherings, James reminisced about their camaraderie and the joy John brought to their social circle. Plans are underway for multiple commemorations of John’s life by his friends and family, commencing next week in Spain, with a memorial service in Mijas Costa and a tribute event in the UK.

Known for his vibrant personality and distinctive waistcoats, John, born in post-war Salford, inherited his father’s passion for horse racing and honed his skills in snooker clubs during his youth. Following his professional snooker career from 1976 to 1994, he was later inducted into the World Snooker Tour hall of fame.

John achieved wider recognition and success through his role on the popular game show Big Break, leading to ventures such as his waistcoat line, pantomime appearances, book deals, and a trick shot app. Fellow snooker luminary Ken Doherty, who shared commentary duties with John, expressed deep sorrow at the news, highlighting John’s impact and camaraderie within the snooker community.

In his autobiography “Say Goodnight JV” published in 2017, John candidly discussed his struggles with gambling addiction, a chapter in his life that nearly derailed his career. Notably, his recent involvement in sell-out shows on the Black Ball 40th Anniversary Tour underscored his enduring popularity and influence in the snooker world.

Dennis Taylor, another snooker great and longtime friend of John, reminisced about their shared history and the camaraderie they enjoyed over the years. Reflecting on John’s humor, storytelling skills, and their deep bond, Dennis paid tribute to his dear friend, acknowledging the immense loss felt by the snooker community.

Snooker champions, fans, and industry figures worldwide mourned the passing of John Virgo, remembering him for his warmth, humor, and enduring contributions to the sport. As tributes poured in from colleagues and admirers, John’s legacy as a beloved figure in snooker history remains indelible.
