However, as I step up to the dispatch box today to recite the names of every woman believed to have been killed by a man in the last year, the ceremonial aspect of my duties fades away.
This annual ritual of reading out these names sheds light on the grim reality that women in our nation and worldwide face daily. It’s a day that never fails to be emotionally taxing. It underscores the weighty responsibility I bear by paying tribute to these women.
Each name symbolizes the collective letdown of our Parliament, institutions, and society in safeguarding women from harm.
Today, as I address not only as a Minister and an MP but also as one of the 265 women MPs, we unite to observe International Women’s Day.
Reflecting on the remarkable achievements of women across various spheres like social, cultural, academic, and political arenas, I am reminded of the importance of acknowledging the lived experiences of many women.
This truth may be uncomfortable for some who prefer to keep it hidden. Using this day solely for self-congratulatory purposes while women face violence and death is not progress; it’s a mere show.
This moment holds immense significance for me. It’s not just about honoring the lives tragically cut short but also about what it signifies about our national identity and the safety of those we prioritize. However, this is not about me.
This moment belongs to these women, to all women and girls enduring threats, abuse, and harassment, often at the cost of their lives. Indeed, this is the most challenging day of the year.
Though my voice trembles, tears are held back, and the emotions of the day weigh heavily, I commit to continuing to pay tribute to women in this manner. The fight must go on to ensure the safety of women and girls in their homes, streets, and workplaces.
This is why we are mobilizing the full force of the state to reduce violence against women and girls by half within a decade. This is not just another governmental policy; it’s a vital support system.
By placing the protection of women and girls at the core of all our actions, we truly honor these women. But our commitment does not end there.
I am ready to take any necessary steps to make this country a safe place for women and girls.
