Donald Trump has shared the unsettling remarks made by Melania after a gunman unleashed gunfire during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
Identified as the suspect in possession of guns and knives during the incident at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night, 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from Torrance, California, was apprehended by officials. Despite being a guest at the hotel where the dinner was taking place, the armed man was swiftly taken into custody and was scheduled to appear in court on Monday. Authorities indicated that he acted alone, but did not disclose his target or motive.
Following the disturbance, Trump recounted that Melania was the first to recognize the alarming situation. Trump described hearing a noise, initially mistaking it for a tray falling, while Melania astutely identified it as a concerning sound.
Reflecting on the event, Trump expressed his shock at such occurrences. During a prompt White House press briefing in the West Wing shortly after the incident, he emphasized the quick response of some individuals to the situation.
Footage shared by Trump on Truth Social captured the suspect evading security barricades as secret service agents swiftly pursued him. Although one officer sustained a gunshot to a bullet-resistant vest, he is in recovery. The gunman was subdued and uninjured, undergoing evaluation at a hospital.
Allen has been taken into custody and is facing charges related to firearms, including assaulting an officer with a deadly weapon. The shooting disrupted the annual dinner event meant to celebrate journalism and the First Amendment, causing a stir due to Trump’s attendance as the sitting president.
