With the holiday season approaching, it’s a good idea to ensure your Wi-Fi is ready to handle the influx of family and friends gathering at your home. Various factors can impact your internet speed during this time, and one surprising culprit could be your Christmas tree.

The festive tree, adorned with shiny decorations and twinkling lights, can disrupt your Wi-Fi signal, especially when positioned near the router or obstructing its line of sight. According to Thomas Joseph, a Connectivity Expert at Sky, older fairy lights with flashing or twinkling modes may interfere with the Wi-Fi signal, causing potential disruptions.

Aside from the Christmas tree, other household items like baby monitors, cordless phones, microwave ovens, and even fish tanks can also affect Wi-Fi connectivity. To optimize your signal coverage, make sure to place the router in an open area and elevate it from the floor. However, avoid positioning it near windows to prevent speed issues and potential security risks.

Virgin Media has advised users to position their Wi-Fi hub in a location that allows for proper ventilation and minimal interference from large electronic devices like TVs or bodies of water such as fish tanks or microwave ovens. Additionally, rebooting the router with a 10-second reset before guests arrive can help resolve any connectivity issues and ensure optimal speeds.

Virgin Media also recommends regular router reboots to maintain network security by updating firmware and security patches. By following these tips, you can ensure a seamless Wi-Fi experience for all your holiday gatherings.
