During a match at the Australian Open, play was temporarily halted when a ball kid became ill on the court. The incident occurred as Greek player Stefano Tsitsipas faced off against Japan’s Shintaro Mochizuki in the tournament’s first round on Tuesday.

Mochizuki claimed the initial set 6-4, but Tsitsipas quickly responded by securing the second set with a score of 6-3. As the third set commenced, the match was disrupted by the sudden illness of a ball kid near the court’s back, resulting in a pause in play for medical attention.

The interruption came shortly after another match involving Naomi Osaka was suspended at the Rod Laver Arena due to unforeseen circumstances. Commentators from TNT Sports initially expressed confusion over the stoppage, speculating on the cause of the delay.

After a brief delay for cleanup and medical assistance, play resumed, and Tsitsipas went on to win the following two sets, ultimately triumphing over Mochizuki with a score of 6-2. This victory set up a second-round clash between Tsitsipas and Czech player Tomas Machac.

Unfortunately, this incident was not an isolated one at this year’s Australian Open, as earlier in the week, another ball kid fainted during a match between Zeynep Sonmez and Ekaterina Alexandrova. Sonmez’s quick actions in assisting the affected ball kid were praised by TNT commentator Catherine Whitaker.

As the tournament continues, incidents like these highlight the importance of prompt medical attention and the supportive actions of players and staff in ensuring the well-being of all involved.
