During an inquest, it was revealed that a mother tragically lost her newborn baby, Poppy Hope Lomas, just one week after birth at University College Hospital in London. The baby was born during a planned home delivery with Edgware Midwives. The mother, Gemma Lomas, had a previous caesarean section for the birth of her first daughter, Willow, but was not informed of the risks associated with a natural delivery.
According to Ms. Lomas, the midwives were slow to react when Poppy was born in distress. She described the heartbreaking moment when the midwife placed the “blue and floppy” baby on her chest. Despite expressing concerns, Ms. Lomas felt there was a lack of urgency in the midwives’ response.
The head midwife, Alice Boardman, had encouraged the mother to consider a vaginal birth after caesarean (VBAC) at home, assuring her that it was a common practice. However, guidelines from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recommend VBACs to be performed in a well-equipped delivery suite with immediate access to caesarean resources.
Poppy was eventually transferred to University College Hospital, where doctors determined she had suffered prolonged oxygen deprivation. Despite efforts to save her, Poppy passed away when her breathing tube was removed a week after birth.
The inquest also highlighted that the midwives dismissed Ms. Lomas’s complaints about pain from her previous C-section scar, further adding to the distressing experience. Ms. Lomas emphasized the emotional toll of losing a healthy baby under such circumstances, especially after a problem-free pregnancy.
The inquest has been adjourned, with further evidence expected from the Edgware Midwives. The tragic loss of Poppy has deeply affected her parents, who are seeking answers and accountability for the events surrounding their daughter’s birth and subsequent passing.
