A woman was convicted for detonating a homemade explosive near her sleeping boyfriend, resulting in the loss of his hand. Keyonna Waddell, 35, faced legal consequences following a dispute with her partner that turned violent. Waddell had previously threatened to use a stick of dynamite on her boyfriend, a threat he did not anticipate becoming a reality.

In March 2024, Waddell tossed the explosive into the room where her boyfriend was asleep. Upon waking to a hissing noise, he attempted to extinguish the flame but was unsuccessful. As he tried to discard the explosive outside, it detonated, causing severe damage to his hand. In distress, he sought aid while Waddell fled the scene.

The injured boyfriend was promptly taken to Nassau University Medical Center in New York, where his hand was amputated. Waddell was apprehended by authorities the next day and later found guilty of assault and multiple weapon possession charges by the Suffolk County District Attorney.

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney emphasized the dangerous nature of domestic violence incidents, commending law enforcement for ensuring accountability in this case. Waddell is scheduled for sentencing in a New York court on May 27, facing a potential prison term of up to 25 years.

The prosecution of this case involves Assistant District Attorney Dana Castaldo and Assistant District Attorney Jacob DeLauter. The investigation was led by Detective John Caraccia of the Suffolk County Police Department’s First Squad, supported by analysts Thomas Kolacki and Brooke Baade from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.
