A lone individual armed with multiple weapons attempted to breach a Washington dinner attended by Donald Trump, described by the US president as a “lone wolf whack job.” Chaos ensued at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner as Trump, a previous target of an assassination attempt, was quickly evacuated by secret service agents.

During the incident, one officer was shot but protected by a bulletproof vest and hospitalized. The suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, was found carrying a shotgun and handgun. He faces charges of assaulting an officer with a dangerous weapon, with additional charges pending, according to acting attorney general Todd Blanche.

Following the shooting, Trump addressed the media and shared images on his Truth Social platform of the apprehended suspect. He commended the secret service for their swift action and reassured that the gunman did not come close to breaching the ballroom where Trump was seated on stage at the time.

Trump remarked on the unity displayed in the room and praised the bravery of the secret service members who swiftly neutralized the threat. He expressed shock at the incident and confirmed that the event would be rescheduled within the next 30 days.

Mayor Muriel Bowser stated that there was no indication of any additional suspects involved. Blanche emphasized that justice would be served and highlighted the courage of law enforcement in handling the situation effectively.

The Washington Hilton, where the incident occurred, had been the site of a previous attempted assassination of a president when Ronald Reagan was shot by John Hinckley Jr in 1981, leading to enhanced security measures at the venue.
