Fears of a potential nuclear catastrophe are escalating as Russia persists in deploying drones and missiles near the decommissioned Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
In anticipation of the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster on April 26, General Ruslan Kravchenko, Ukraine’s chief prosecutor, has accused Russia of engaging in risky military maneuvers close to Ukrainian nuclear facilities to intimidate and spread fear.
General Kravchenko highlighted that Russian hypersonic Kinzhal missiles have been spotted near the Chernobyl site and the Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plant since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. According to reports, 35 Kinzhal missiles were observed flying within approximately 12 miles of these facilities, with 18 missiles passing near both sites during a single flight.
Characterizing these actions as acts of intimidation, General Kravchenko emphasized that the missile launches over the nuclear sites serve no military purpose. In a separate incident, a Russian attack drone allegedly struck the Chernobyl site in February last year, breaching the radiation containment shield. While Russia denied involvement, Ukrainian authorities suspect deliberate targeting.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development estimates the repair costs to exceed €500 million, cautioning of irreversible damage if left unaddressed. Ukrainian prosecutors believe the attacks were intentional, with Russia potentially using the Chernobyl site to avoid air defenses around populated areas.
Regarding the crashed Kinzhal missiles near the Khmelnytskyi plant, General Kravchenko mentioned that the reasons for the incidents remain unclear, with no evidence of interception found. The prosecutor condemned the deliberate flights of armed drones over nuclear facilities as reckless and indicative of a disregard for civilian safety.
Since mid-2024, there have been numerous instances of Russian drones detected near the Chernobyl radiation shield, with at least 92 drones identified within a three-mile radius. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has expressed concerns about military activities near nuclear sites, emphasizing the need for restraint to prevent potential nuclear accidents.
The Chernobyl disaster, which impacted millions and contaminated vast areas, remains a stark reminder of the risks associated with nuclear power.
