On the picket line in South Wales, health visitor Jo Hyde is keen to return to assisting families in Merthyr Tydfil. Jo, 55, residing in Ogmore, Vale of Glamorgan, expressed her surprise at being on strike for the first time in her 36-year career. The health visitors, covering deprived areas like Merthyr Tydfil, Rhondda Cynon Taf, and Bridgend, have been on strike for seven weeks due to a banding decision resulting in significant income losses. This disparity in pay stems from differing interpretations of the Agenda for Change grading system across regions, notably between Scotland and parts of Wales and England.

The health visitors, predominantly women, argue that their qualifications and responsibilities warrant a Band 7 classification, similar to health visitors in Scotland. Unite general secretary Sharon Graham has voiced support for the health visitors, emphasizing the importance of fair compensation for their essential work. Despite their dedication to their profession, health visitors like Jenna Terry from Aberdare feel compelled to strike to demand pay parity with colleagues in Scotland.

In response to the dispute, the CTM Health Board maintained that health visitors in their region are placed in the same Band 6 category as in England and Wales. However, health visitors like Melani Smith, with 42 years of service experience, feel undervalued and seek recognition for their expanded roles and expertise. The ongoing strike in South Wales is part of a broader protest against NHS job cuts and service reductions, showcasing the solidarity among healthworkers facing similar challenges nationwide.

As the strike continues, health visitors like Melani emphasize their desire to be valued appropriately for the crucial services they provide to families in need.
