A fire broke out at an airbase in Gloucestershire currently being utilized by the US military. Emergency crews rushed to combat the blaze at RAF Fairford early on Sunday morning. Pictures from the scene indicated that the building’s roof had collapsed.
There have been no reports of injuries, and no damage has been sustained by RAF aircraft, although the condition of any US equipment is uncertain.
The US air force was given authorization by the Government to use RAF Fairford, located near the Wiltshire border, after the start of the conflict in Iran. The facility has been deployed by Washington to launch defensive operations against Tehran.
Protests have taken place at the airbase, with around 200 individuals gathering outside the gates. Demonstrators held signs with messages such as “no war on Iran,” “US out of British bases,” and “stop Trump’s deadly war.”
A representative from Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service stated, “We are attending to a fire in a commercial building in the Fairford area. Residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed due to smoke from the fire.”
The Ministry of Defence mentioned that the fire occurred in an “old/disused building” and was caused by wiring. A spokesperson from the US Airforce confirmed that the incident happened in an unoccupied structure.
The spokesperson added, “No injuries were reported, the fire has been controlled, and there is currently no threat to the base population or local community. We appreciate the assistance from our local community members and services, prioritizing the safety of our personnel, families, and neighboring communities. An investigation has been launched and is ongoing, with further details to follow.”
