The union representing WestJet cabin crew has disclosed the specifics of the tentative agreement reached with the Calgary-based airline following a one-day strike. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) has revealed that the deal encompasses an over 18% salary increase spread over three years, along with a novel “duty period premium” that provides additional compensation for ground duties. Additionally, it incorporates extended time off, enhanced food and uniform allowances, and various other benefits.
Amid a lengthy holiday weekend for many, all WestJet flights in a significant part of Canada were suspended as the countdown to a strike by 4,400 flight attendants neared its end, with the employees walking off the job early Sunday. However, the airline and the union managed to secure a tentative agreement early Monday, leading to a gradual restoration of WestJet operations back to normalcy.
The cabin crew members are scheduled to vote on the agreement in the upcoming weeks.
