Luigi Mangione confessed in court last Friday to the fatal shooting of health insurance executive Brian Thompson. Mangione pleaded guilty to two federal charges of stalking the CEO with the intent to kill him. “I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan, causing his death,” Mangione stated, dressed in beige prison attire, as he delivered a prepared statement criticizing the U.S. health insurance system.

Thompson’s widow, accompanied by family members, sat in the front row of the courtroom. Mangione’s admission of shooting Thompson brought her to tears, with two women nearby providing comfort.

The guilty plea spares Mangione from a federal trial in the high-profile case involving the killing of the 50-year-old UnitedHealthcare CEO. The brazen crime drew condemnation from public officials and highlighted public frustration with health insurance industry practices.

At 28 years old, Mangione entered his plea without a plea agreement with federal prosecutors, leaving no assurance of leniency at his upcoming sentencing, scheduled for December 18. Prosecutors plan to seek the maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett can consider Mangione’s guilty plea as a mitigating factor during sentencing. Additionally, the federal plea allows Mangione’s legal team to file a motion to dismiss separate state murder and weapons charges, arguing against being punished twice under New York’s double jeopardy law.

During his court statement, Mangione mentioned facing insurance challenges after a back injury. He detailed how he impersonated an investor to obtain information about UnitedHealthcare’s 2024 conference, which ultimately led to his plan to kill Thompson in New York.

UnitedHealth Group expressed gratitude to law enforcement for bringing Thompson’s killer to justice. Thompson’s family described the plea as a significant step towards justice and urged the court to ensure a fitting sentence for the crime.

Thompson, who led UnitedHealth Group’s insurance unit, was fatally shot outside a hotel during an investor conference on December 4, 2024. The case gained widespread media coverage due to graphic footage of the incident and the subsequent manhunt that led to Mangione’s arrest in Pennsylvania.

Mangione had previously pleaded not guilty to federal murder, weapons, and stalking charges. The murder and weapons charges were dismissed earlier this year due to legal technicalities, eliminating the possibility of the death penalty in the federal case.

Mangione also faces state terrorism, murder, weapons, and forgery charges. The trial for the state case is set for September 8 before Justice Gregory Carro in Manhattan, with potential sentencing of 25 years to life for second-degree murder if convicted.

Mangione’s lawyers seek to dismiss the state case under New York’s double jeopardy law, arguing that another trial would violate his constitutional rights. The District Attorney’s office is prepared to contest this motion, emphasizing their commitment to seeking justice for Thompson and his family.
