The head of the sole anti-war party in Russia announced his determination to remain in the country and continue advocating for change, despite facing escalating pressure from the authorities, resulting in the party being excluded from the upcoming parliamentary elections. The Supreme Court’s recent ruling prohibited the post-Soviet liberal party Yabloko, meaning “apple” in Russian, from participating in the September vote. Leader Nikolai Rybakov expressed that the decision reflected the government’s unease that their campaign to end the long-standing war in Ukraine was resonating with the electorate.
Rybakov emphasized the significance of the overwhelming support from the people, which was evident and undeniable, surpassing the court’s verdict. He recounted how hundreds of backers outside the court loudly voiced their disapproval, chanting “shame” during the proceedings. Yabloko, formerly a prominent liberal voice in parliament and a critic of the government, now only holds a few regional seats with no representation in the State Duma, where the Putin-backed United Russia party dominates.
While United Russia is expected to maintain its stronghold in the lower house after the September elections, Rybakov expressed confidence that Yabloko would pose a more formidable challenge if permitted to partake. Yabloko is currently appealing the Supreme Court’s decision, which stemmed from allegations of undisclosed campaign support from Western entities and other accusations that the party refutes.
Rybakov, a 47-year-old opposition stalwart, affirmed his commitment to staying in Russia despite stringent censorship laws and wartime regulations that have prompted many dissenting voices to flee or face legal consequences for opposing the war or expressing dissent. He stressed the necessity of effecting change within the country to alter the political landscape. The public sentiment against the war is challenging to gauge due to stringent government controls on dissent, although the Levada Center reported a decline in support for the armed forces’ actions in Ukraine, reaching 66% in July, the lowest level since February 2022.
Yabloko’s concise manifesto advocating for peace and a flourishing democratic Russia has resonated with numerous new supporters, underscoring a substantial segment of Russian society desiring an end to the conflict. Rybakov highlighted the unity of millions of individuals who share their vision, stressing the resilience against oppressive tactics targeting the party and its leadership. Social media platforms have been abuzz with videos backing Yabloko, featuring individuals holding apples symbolically or engaging in dances to Russian tunes alluding to apples as a subtle nod to their voting preference for the upcoming elections.
