Tens of thousands of music enthusiasts gathered at Great Park in Irvine, California, during the weekend to enjoy performances by their favorite artists at a groundbreaking event aimed at supporting women’s health, reproductive rights, and the fight against gender-based violence.
The Daisy Chain Fields festival, organized by pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo, emulates the pioneering Lilith Fair from the 1990s with its all-female lineup. The event featured a mix of established and emerging stars such as Chappell Roan, Doechii, Bikini Kill, and Garbage.
Before the festival kicked off, Rodrigo revealed that they had raised $10 million for the event’s 10 partner non-profits, including Planned Parenthood and the National Institute for Reproductive Health. This amount was later doubled to $20 million through a matching donation from Melinda French Gates.
Rodrigo, who first announced the festival in June, expressed gratitude to those who paved the way for events like Daisy Chain Fields. The 23-year-old artist paid tribute to icons like Stevie Nicks and Alanis Morissette, who made special appearances during the festival.
The festival’s name, “Daisy Chain,” symbolizes unity and strength derived from individual contributions coming together. This event took place amidst a challenging time for women’s rights in the U.S., with ongoing threats to reproductive rights post the Roe v Wade decision.
Apart from the music performances, attendees could explore various art installations, including a LEGO mural and exhibits tracing the Riot Grrrl movement. Notable activist groups like Guerrilla Girls and artists like Yoko Ono and Jenny Holzer contributed to the immersive experience.
Fans and participants described the festival as a positive and historic gathering, emphasizing the importance of supporting women’s causes during these divisive times. The festival’s non-profit partners expressed their gratitude for the community’s support and solidarity, highlighting the significance of events like Daisy Chain Fields in advocating for women’s rights and well-being.
