The Ottawa Redblacks have now set a new record for the longest losing streak in the modern era of the CFL. Their recent 33-21 defeat against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers marked their 15th consecutive loss, extending back to the previous season. This surpasses the previous record held by the Shreveport Pirates, who endured 14 straight losses in 1994.
Steve Daniel, a CFL historian and the league’s associate vice-president of football analytics and statistics, confirmed that Ottawa now holds the modern-day record for the longest losing streak in the CFL. This news was met with disappointment by Jimmy Fata, a dedicated Redblacks fan who was present at the game in Winnipeg.
The Redblacks’ losing streak is not only a modern record but also ranks as the third-longest in CFL history, dating back to 1907. Another loss against the Montreal Alouettes would tie them with the Hamilton Wildcats for the second spot with 16 consecutive losses.
According to Daniel, the evolution of the league post-Second World War saw a significant professionalization of football in Canada. The Wildcats, who had a brief existence and only managed to win a single game, were a product of this era. Daniel emphasized the need for the Redblacks to continue rebuilding their roster, particularly on the defensive side, to improve their performance.
Despite the ongoing challenges, Fata emphasized the importance of supporting the team through thick and thin, likening it to raising a child. He remains optimistic about the team’s future despite the current struggles.
