Millions of Gmail users will soon have the option to change their email addresses to something entirely new. Google previously hinted at this update, and it is now being implemented globally. According to a recent announcement on the Gmail blog page, Google has confirmed that users can switch their Google Account email ending in gmail.com to a new address with the same domain.
This update could be well-received, particularly by those who wish to change their username or have had changes in their circumstances. However, Google has emphasized an important point to note as the ability to change email addresses is gradually rolling out to all users, and some may not have access to this feature yet.
Under the new system, users can operate both their old and new email addresses simultaneously. Any emails sent to the current Gmail address will automatically be forwarded to the new one. Google assures users that none of their account data will be impacted, ensuring that photos, messages, and emails associated with the original address will remain unaffected.
For users interested in checking whether they can switch to a new Gmail address without losing their emails, here are the steps to follow:
– Visit myaccount.google.com/google-account-email on your computer and sign in if prompted.
– Click on Personal info in the top-left corner.
– Select Email, then Google Account email.
– Under “Google Account email,” click Change Google Account email.
– If the option is not available, it may not be accessible to you yet.
– Enter the new username, ensuring it is not currently in use or previously used and deleted.
– Click on Change email, then confirm by selecting Yes, change email.
– Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.
Once the process is finished, the new Gmail address will become the primary account email, while the old address will be retained as an alternate email option.
