Yvette Cooper expressed serious apprehension regarding the increasing Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon and emphasized the urgent necessity of incorporating Lebanon into a regional ceasefire agreement. The Foreign Secretary criticized Israel’s ongoing bombardment of Lebanon, labeling it as inappropriate, especially as cracks began to show in the ceasefire arrangement for the region.

Shortly after Donald Trump’s announcement of the agreement, confusion arose over the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, with Israel asserting that their conflict was not covered by the ceasefire while Pakistan, acting as a peace mediator, claimed otherwise.

Israel launched multiple strikes on Lebanon, prompting Iran to threaten ships in the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation. Israel boasted about targeting Hezbollah locations in Beirut with 100 attacks in a span of 10 minutes, asserting that their actions were not part of the peace deal.

In a statement, Ms. Cooper expressed deep concerns over the recent Israeli strikes, emphasizing the urgency of ending hostilities in Lebanon for the security of Israel and the broader Middle East region. She also highlighted the need for toll-free and unhindered shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, stressing that Iran should not impose tolls on this vital maritime route.

Keir Starmer and global leaders demanded Israel cease its assault on Lebanon and pushed for a permanent US-Iran ceasefire. French President Emmanuel Macron strongly condemned Israel’s indiscriminate strikes in Lebanon, labeling them as unacceptable.

US Vice President JD Vance acknowledged a misunderstanding regarding the ceasefire agreement, clarifying that Lebanon was not included in the ceasefire, contrary to Iranian beliefs. However, Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif stated that an immediate ceasefire, including Lebanon, had been agreed upon by the US, Iran, and their allies.

The ceasefire deal between Mr. Trump and Iran was finalized at the last minute, with the US president warning of dire consequences if Iran did not comply. The agreement focused on ending the conflict and reopening the crucial shipping lane of the Strait of Hormuz, previously blockaded by Iran.
