Upon my move to Vancouver from Johannesburg in 2018, I was initially captivated by the city’s allure. The majestic North Shore mountains, visible even from a cozy hot chocolate spot in the heart of the city, left me in awe. I cherished the rhythmic patter of rain in Pacific Spirit Park during strolls with my nephew. The gesture of bus drivers halting for a quick coffee break during the morning commute added to the city’s charm.
However, as time passed, I realized my infatuation with Vancouver was fleeting. The city failed to meet my lofty expectations, leading to a bitter resentment. Lacking a social circle and the elusive “Canadian experience” sought after in job postings, I found myself in an admin role at a startup, toiling long hours for meager pay just to afford a cramped basement suite.
My discontent transformed into disdain as I compared Vancouver’s limited Skytrain routes to London’s expansive tube system and bemoaned the leisurely pace of West Coast life. The perpetual rain that permeated the city for months on end only fueled my frustration.
Most significantly, I yearned for human connection. Accustomed to thriving in close-knit communities in my past endeavors as a teacher, volunteer, or student, I felt isolated in Vancouver’s seemingly sparse social scene. My quest for companionship led me to inquire about the city’s whereabouts, only to discover a penchant for outdoor activities like hiking, leaving me adrift in solitude.
Eventually, the pandemic struck, intensifying my feelings of isolation and prompting me to seek solace in London’s bustling atmosphere. Yet, amidst the vibrant chaos of the city, I found myself feeling like an outsider, detached from the newfound tranquility that had quietly enveloped me during my time in Vancouver.
Reflecting on my journey, I realized that Vancouver had subtly molded me into a more introspective and grounded individual, embracing the city’s unique essence. Despite its imperfections and rainy days, I longed to reconcile with Vancouver, yearning for simple moments like cozy Scrabble games and serene hikes. As my plane touched down in the city once again, I extended an open invitation to Vancouver, hoping for a second chance at a meaningful connection.
