A man previously honored as Teacher of the Month has been denounced as a ‘lone wolf whack job’ by Donald Trump following a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ dinner. Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from Torrance, California, was recognized for his teaching efforts by students who described him as intelligent and kind.

Allen had checked into the Washington Hilton Hotel where the annual dinner was being held, attended by 2,500 guests. Chaos ensued when gunshots were fired as the suspect attempted to breach a security checkpoint, injuring an officer who was wearing a bulletproof vest.

President Trump and First Lady Melania were swiftly escorted offstage along with others. Trump later confirmed the apprehension of the gunman, posting a photo of the suspect subdued at the hotel. Police revealed that Allen was armed with a shotgun, handgun, and several knives.

Describing the perpetrator as a ‘lone wolf,’ Trump commended the swift actions of law enforcement during a press briefing. The officer who was shot was reported to be recovering well.

Allen, a former Teacher of the Month, had no prior criminal record and was praised for his academic prowess by those who knew him. He held a master’s degree in computer science and was a self-employed game developer in addition to his teaching role.

Following his arrest, media and law enforcement swarmed the Torrance neighborhood where Allen had resided with his family. Neighbors expressed shock and disbelief at the violent incident, describing the family as friendly and peaceful individuals.

The White House Correspondents’ dinner has a history of security threats, with President Ronald Reagan surviving an assassination attempt outside the same venue in 1981. Trump emphasized that the gunman acted alone and lauded the Secret Service’s response.

The British ambassador and other attendees expressed gratitude for the Secret Service’s quick intervention during the event. The state visit by the King and Queen was scheduled shortly after the incident, prompting security concerns. Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the potential impact on the royal visit.

Charges against Allen include the use of a firearm during a violent crime and assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon. He is set to appear in federal court for arraignment on Monday.
