A former top jockey, Luke Tarrant, has been detained in custody on three counts of armed robbery. Tarrant, who is currently serving a 12-month ban from racing for a separate offense, was denied bail during his court appearance in Caloundra, Queensland, Australia, last week.
The charges against Tarrant include three instances of armed robbery, entering premises with intent to commit a serious offense, and possession of dangerous drugs, as reported by Racenet.com. The crime of robbery carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison, which can be increased to life imprisonment for cases involving armed robbery, collaboration with others, or violence.
Tarrant is scheduled to appear in court again on March 19. The 31-year-old jockey, with 502 wins under his belt including three Group race victories, last competed in August. His notable achievement was winning the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic in 2015.
In recent history, Tarrant faced a six-month ban in 2020 for admitting to headbutting a fellow jockey. Additionally, in October of the previous year, he was disqualified for a year after failing to cooperate with a stewards’ inquiry into the alleged falsification of health assessment forms used for licensing.
The case was referred to Queensland’s Racing Integrity Commission, which directed Tarrant to enter a plea. However, after four weeks passed with no response, the Commission panel ruled that Tarrant’s actions undermined the integrity framework that protects participant welfare and public trust in wagering. Stewards concluded that a 12-month disqualification, effective from October 8, 2025, to October 8, 2026, was warranted.
