The Pan Pacific championships in Irvine, Calif., showcased contrasting performances for Canadian swimmers Taylor Ruck and Summer McIntosh on Friday night.
Ruck secured a silver medal in the women’s 100m butterfly and later added a bronze as part of the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team, bringing her total medal count to five at the competition. She achieved a personal best time of 56.71 seconds in the 100m butterfly, finishing behind American Gretchen Walsh.
Meanwhile, McIntosh faced disappointment after winning the B final of the women’s 400m freestyle event but failing to qualify for the A final due to a misjudgment during the morning heats. Expressing frustration, McIntosh took full responsibility for the error and vowed to learn from it.
In other events, Canadians Blake Tierney and Ethan Ekk claimed silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 200m backstroke. Tierney highlighted the significance of both athletes being on the podium, emphasizing the rewards of dedicated training.
Ruck continued her successful run by leading the Canadian women’s team to a bronze medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay event. The U.S. secured gold in the race, followed by Australia with silver.
Despite McIntosh’s setback, she remains focused on the upcoming 200m IM event, where she holds world records and titles. The Canadian swimmer aims to bounce back from the challenges faced during the Pan Pacific championships.
