Canada is vying for a chance to secure spots in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics as flag football makes its Olympic debut. The world championships in Germany this week will determine the first available positions for the upcoming Games. The men’s and women’s Olympics tournaments will each consist of six teams, with two spots up for grabs in each category. The United States, a dominant force in flag football, automatically qualifies as the host. The remaining three spots for each gender will be determined through a two-stage qualifier starting in Montreal in June 2028.

Although winning at the world championships is not mandatory for Olympic qualification, it would be advantageous to secure a spot early and avoid the pressure of the last-chance qualifier in the following years.

Sixteen teams in both the men’s and women’s tournaments are competing in Germany, divided into groups for the preliminary rounds. The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage, with the medal games deciding the world champions and the Olympic qualifiers.

Canada’s women will face Panama, Brazil, and Japan in the group stage matches, while the men will play against Austria, Japan, and received a default win due to Nigeria’s withdrawal. The women’s team is currently ranked fourth globally, aiming to improve on past performances, including a world championship win in 2010.

The men’s team, seeking to secure their first world title since 2008, faces tough competition in their group. The Olympics’ inclusion of flag football has prompted speculation about potential NFL and CFL stars joining the teams, but the differences between flag and tackle football have been highlighted in recent exhibitions.

Canada’s national teams, featuring notable players like Antony Auclair and Sabrina Gervais, are embracing the challenge at the world championships. The tournament can be watched live on CBC Gem and the CBC Sports website, providing fans with an exciting display of flag football action.
