A discovery in the Bluefish Caves and a mine site in northern Yukon initially led experts to believe they had unearthed remains of an ice-age puma or cougar. However, DNA analysis conducted by the University of California revealed a surprising twist. The study, led by former lab technician Molly Cassatt-Johnstone, identified the bones as belonging to the extinct American cheetah, known as Yukon Miracinonyx.

This breakthrough, detailed in a paper published in Current Biology, sheds new light on the ice-age cat’s diet and habitat range. Researchers were astonished to find that these cheetahs, believed to have evolved for hunting pronghorns on grassy plains, thrived in the Arctic tundra of Beringia, a region where Asia and North America once connected.

To unravel the mystery of how the Miracinonyx survived in such an environment, scientists employed stable isotope analysis. This forensic technique provided insights into the cheetahs’ diet, revealing a surprising preference for fish. This behavior, uncommon in cats both past and present, posed a puzzle for researchers seeking to understand the ecosystem dynamics of the time.

The study also uncovered that the genetic makeup of the Yukon cheetahs was more closely related to North American pumas than African cheetahs. The low genetic diversity and limited adaptive potential of the population may have contributed to their eventual extinction. Yukon paleontologist Grant Zazula suggests renaming this unique northern population from ‘American Cheetah’ to ‘Yukon Cheetah’ in recognition of their distinct characteristics and habitat.

The findings underscore the importance of continuous exploration and analysis in paleontology, as each new discovery has the potential to unveil previously unknown aspects of prehistoric life.
