In the early hours of Monday, March 2, a commuter in Edmonton was attacked while journeying through Churchill Station en route to the Valley Line LRT. The individual disclosed being struck in the face in a subsequent text message sent to Transit Watch, the safety reporting line of Edmonton Transit Services.

The commuter admitted delaying the report as they were eager to leave the scene and return home quickly. On the same day, Transit Watch received multiple reports from riders concerning harassment, drug usage, drug transactions, a fire lit at a bus stop, and an individual brandishing a flame lighter inside a transit center.

For years, the City of Edmonton has been striving to enhance safety on public transit by recruiting additional peace officers and police, expanding outreach teams, and allocating more resources toward cleanliness and security upgrades. Despite these efforts, text messages forwarded to the line within a month earlier this year indicated ongoing apprehensions among many riders regarding safety within the system.

CBC News acquired text message exchanges sent to the line between mid-February and mid-March through a request under the Access to Information Act. The extensive documentation, spanning over 200 pages, showcased continual reports from various areas of the city.

Numerous reports highlighted concerns about drug usage and smoking in LRT stations, bus stops, and pedways. Riders expressed frustration over being exposed to illicit substances and encountering unpredictable individuals regularly during their commutes. Instances of meth, crack, and fentanyl use on transit premises were reported, along with incidents of harassment and verbal abuse fueled by drug influence.

Additionally, riders observed drug transactions, stumbled upon drug paraphernalia, witnessed disruptive behaviors like public urination and screaming, and encountered obstacles blocking paths. Concerns were also raised about safety hazards such as broken glass, fires at transit locations, physical altercations, and threats of violence.

Katarina Hamilton, a frequent transit user, disclosed reaching out to Transit Watch approximately once a month. She frequently witnessed obstructions and fires, particularly during late-night hours. Hamilton recounted an incident involving a physical altercation at Central Station a year ago, prompting her to engage with Transit Watch and involve law enforcement due to safety concerns for herself and nearby children.

To address safety concerns, Edmonton Transit Services is implementing various measures aimed at fostering a sense of security among riders. These measures include bolstering the presence of peace officers and expanding community outreach teams. Furthermore, initiatives such as providing cellular connectivity in LRT tunnels, conducting enhanced rider engagement, offering travel training support, and enhancing station infrastructure are underway to boost perceptions of transit safety.

City councilor Anne Stevenson underscored the significance of transit safety, emphasizing ongoing efforts to mitigate challenges associated with social disorder. Initiatives like pop-up events organized by the Edmonton Arts Council at downtown LRT stations aim to create vibrant spaces, with considerations for additional safety attendants.

Despite these measures, addressing root causes of social disorder remains a challenge. Efforts to secure additional funding for housing and drug treatment support are seen as positive steps towards addressing underlying issues contributing to safety concerns on public transit.
