A man from Dundurn, Saskatchewan is facing charges related to vandalism at a synagogue in Saskatoon, according to city police. The 31-year-old individual has been charged with three counts of mischief under $5,000. The incident occurred at the Congregation Agudas Israel synagogue during a prayer service on August 1. Police reported that the man threw eggs at several vehicles and parts of the building.

Following the incident, authorities released a surveillance camera image of the suspect. Through public tips, the suspect was identified, and arrangements were made for him to surrender at the police headquarters on Thursday, as stated in a news release on Friday. Subsequently, he was released under certain conditions pending his initial court appearance.

Although the Saskatoon police hate crimes unit participated in the investigation, the suspect has not been charged with any hate crimes, the release clarified. Superintendent James Oliver emphasized that in Canada, “hate crime” is a broad term and not a specific charge under the Criminal Code. He mentioned that evidence of bias, prejudice, or hate could be considered an aggravating factor during sentencing.

While the Criminal Code does have a provision addressing hate-motivated mischief against religious places of worship, such as churches, mosques, synagogues, or temples, a police spokesperson informed CBC News that the charges were based on the available evidence and could be subject to amendment by the prosecution if new evidence supports it.

Rabbi Claudio Jodorkovsky expressed concern over the vandalism occurring in daylight but also emphasized the need to trust in the safety of the Jewish community in Saskatoon. Statistics Canada reported that in 2024, 70% of police-reported hate crimes targeting religious groups were aimed at the Jewish community.
